ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

Monte das Migas Gatas started as way to

go back to our origins.

Although our base is and has always been in Lisbon, the busy capital of Portugal, one side of the family has its origins in Alentejo, and we were always immersed in its culture, heritage, costumes - which we love and cherish.

Alentejo is so much more than a region;

it's a way of life.

It came a time in which Monte das Migas Gatas made sense as not only a getaway, but also as a place we could build from scratch and where we could fully embrace our legacy,  while also creating something for the future. A place where we could offer our view of a cozy, comfortable and rich living. Where we retold old stories by the fireplace in the chilly winter nights our shared a drink with friends by the pool. Where we can experience the fresh, pure and unpolluted air of the mountain, have the most amazing gastronomic and epicurian experiences in the most unpretensious places, and connect with honest and welcoming people.

A place we Love,

And which we hope you will come to love too.

THE CITY

Estremoz is known as "white city", in part for its traditional white houses, but also for its white Marble deposits, that is such an ancient industry that even the Romans utilized it in their constructions in this area, centuries ago. Nowadays this region accually contributes with 90% of the marble exported by the country (Portugal is the World’s second largest Marble producer).
The historical weight of Estremoz dates back as far as the Roman and Muslim occupation of the Peninsula. During the Middle Age, it was an important site, mainly for its strategic situation, a mere 50km from the neighboring Spain.
Estremoz is surrounded by two different sets of defensive walls: the first dating from the 13th century around the old town, next to the Castle, and another built during the 17th century on the lower part of the town. It has several highlights: from the Vila Velha (old part of town, its historical centre) up to the 13th century Castle and the Royal Palace - nowadays a luxury Hotel - or the gracious Rainha Santa Chapel, and other historical places, such as the Convent and Church of São Francisco (14th and 18th centuries), the Santa Maria Church (16th century), or the Dom José I Square, the beautiful and central Rossio Square.
The region is  rich in popular art and widely known for its craftsmen, and for the products manufactured with clay, wood, and cork. The Cuisine is also very famous and traditional from this region of Alentejo, with emphasis on pork and lamb dishes, the tipical bread and herbs such as pennyroyal. In this demarked wine region are produced some of the most appreciated Portuguese red mature wine.
